Mimoun- The Folk Protest Musician

Morocco is an Islamic country of the northern part of Africa, with a considerable impact on its culture and traditions during its evolution to the present modern Morocco.  The music of the Morocco is basically of Arab origin. To be more precise, Andalausian music, for which Morocco is considered birth place, along with others like Chabbi and mainly the Berber folk music. The historical and the political background of the Berber people who were the original population of the northern part of Africa, ranging from Morocco to Egypt.

Waild Mimoun was one of the famous personality in the Berber people. The Berber people had a significant role in building the political background of Morocco. The changes that occurred in the regimes in Morocco has a significant influence on the Berber people. The Berbers were actually not of Islamic origin. Islam was introduced in Morocco. The following statement this fact is quite evident. Waild Mimouns literature portrayed the rich cultural heritage and the traditions that Berbers had.

 Culture is more than language and literature. Attention to history is also important for
our activities, it s part of our identity ... and that consists of Amazigh-elements, Arab elements, Islamic elements, and also Jewish elements, although these last elements nowadays do not get so much attention anymore. One needs to be realistic 80 of Dutch Moroccans are Berbers, so we pay attention to that. But we are not fanatic.

The literature of Waild Mimoun, who was a folk- protest musician portrayed the facts about the  historical background of Morocco, which was quite undigestable for the status quo. So, in order to prevent the potential political turmoil that can result from the widespread approach of Walid Mimouns message , his music was held in a contentious view.
